Many of us find it incredibly hard to let go of work thoughts. We constantly think about our to-do lists, about challenges, problems, and tasks we need to tackle in the future. Maybe we also worry about actions and decisions we have already taken. Simply by thinking about our to-dos, we can put ourselves into a state in which we experience anticipatory stress. Anticipatory stress can produce exactly the same physical and mental symptoms as the stress we might experience from actually doing these tasks.
What is more, because we are always connected, always reachable, constantly checking our email and phones, work and task-related thoughts keep popping into our consciousness. Even a single email containing work-related matters can completely destroy our peace of mind. And many of us do not have good defenses in place regarding the erosion of the work-life boundary that is the result of the technologies we all use daily. It is very hard to establish disciplined phone and email strategies that protect our down time.
When our minds are on work topics even when we are not physically at work, we cannot let go of work-related stress and emotions. What is more, often, when we think about work, we don’t even think strategically or productively about it. We simply fret about it, ruminating about actions taken or actions to come. We do not plan or strategize, we worry and make ourselves very anxious.
